Crabtree Nature Preserve
Here are some great photos from our field trip to Crabtree Nature Preserve. Hopefully you can have your child explain some of the pictures to you.
Digging in
We are really starting to dig into our curriculum and studies now, it's quite exciting!
(Don't forget to check out the pictures at the end!)
Most of our routines are going well, but we don't want to become complacent. If you can still support with reminders from home, it is greatly appreciated. Many Blue cards are being returned on Fridays without parent signatures. It is my hope that your child is responsible about keeping up daily with recording reading titles, pages and times. Your signature helps to communicate to me and indicate that the home/school connection is alive and well.
Math - We have been moving into our first round of understanding and working with multiplication. Concentrating on numbers in groups and using multiplication as a more efficient method of adding. The Big Dinner, is a creative problem solving unit we utilize to bring multiplication to life. They have been working with a partner to share strategies. We have been using the scenario of shopping for a big dinner (turkey, apples, carrots, potatoes...) using charts of price per pound to work out how much the dinner will cost. Using strategies of a ratio chart, such as skip counting, doubling, the distributive property and more, the kids have been utilizing different strategies and proving their ideas. After this we will continue to work on our multiplication facts through arrays and other patterns. This unit will take us through the holidays.
Reading - We are at the tail end of this unit (Building a Reader's Life) and are looking into how readers build deeper understanding, decode words, build context and develop vocabulary. We recently discussed having GRIT as we read and tackling words or passages that are difficult to understand. We have been exploring figurative language and building understanding through the greater context of what we are reading. We will take this unit through December and will begin on a non-fiction reading unit in January.
Writing - We continue to work on our narrative writing (Telling True Stories). We are very close to publishing our first story and will begin developing our next story very soon. Our next story will move a bit faster through the writing process and typing our stories right into the Google Drive to help integrate our new typing skills.
Science - What fun we have had with our engineer challenge of Waterproof the Roof. This activity connected to our findings and understandings of our study of water. Though most of the roofs failed to keep the water out, the kids have used this experience as a great learning opportunity. Very soon we will have some video footage to share on SeeSaw.
Social Studies - We have come to a place of connecting the fundamental needs, the study of climate areas in the US and the introduction of Native Americans. Building an understanding of the diverse beliefs and cultures amongst the tribes, and strengthening the context of their ability to live harmoniously on the land within their environmental and climate area, we are learning that that though people have the same fundamental needs, we all go about fulfilling those needs differently. Our recent SSS - Social Studies Switch-a-roo was dedicated to taking a closer look at the Native Americans of the Northeast Woodlands. They were able to learn about the dependency on the White-tailed Deer, their use of Wampum belts and ceremonies that included the uses of False Face Masks.
Now that the holidays are upon us, we have much to do prior to our winter break. We have many celebrations planned, but will also need to make sure we put forth the appropriate efforts to balance our work and play. Sleep and healthy eating are crucial this time of year to stay healthy!!
Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving and other holiday celebrations. Hoping you all get to experience the magic of this time of year.
